Summit
of Mineral Ridge achieved by climbing team of
Scott &
McKinley
On
September 30th, 2000 the climbing team of Scott and McKinley achieved
the much sought after,
but rarely accomplished, summit of
Mineral Ridge.
Fighting inclement weather, and periodically
regretting their daring decision to forego oxygen,
the
unassisted expedition was made without the benefit of Sherpa or
yak.
Highlights of the climb included a number of creative
strategic techniques,
among them, the 'portage climb', where one
member of the party carries the other for a (generally short) period
of time,
and the 'sugar/carbo break', wherein a short rest is
taken and glazed donuts are consumed.
While the team escaped
without serious injury, the quick descent,
necessitated by the
need to reduce exposure to the severe elements, resulted in a number
of near catastrophic falls.
One member of the team expressed
reservations about another attempt.
